One book in particular stayed with Steve Jobs his entire life, Autobiography of a Yogi...'the guide to meditation and spirituality that he had first read as a teenager, then re-read in India and had read once a year ever since.' --Huffington Post, review of Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve JobsFabulous stories from his life keep the reader inspired, informed, and thoroughly entertained from beginning to end. --Yoga JournalThis book is a must-read for the budding yogi, the spiritual veteran looking for a deeper understanding, and everyone in between... --Yogi Times 1893 1952 Hailed as the father of Yoga in the West, Paramahansa Yogananda is regarded as one of the great spiritual figures of our time. Born in northern India, he came to the United States in 1920, where for more than 30 years he taught the ancient science of meditation and the art of balanced spiritual living. That same year he founded Self-Realization Fellowship, to disseminate his writings and teachings worldwide. Through his best-selling classic, Autobiography of a Yogi, and his numerous other books, he has introduced millions throughout the world to the spiritual principles of yoga meditation and the universal truths underlying all world religions.
Self-Realization Fellowship's editions, and none others, include extensive material added by the author after the first edition was published, including a final chapter on the closing years of his life.
Selected as "One of the 100 Best Spiritual Books of the Twentieth Century", Autobiography of a Yogi has been translated into more than 30 languages, and is regarded worldwide as a classic of religious literature. Several million copies have been sold, and it continues to appear on best-seller lists after more than sixty consecutive years in print.
With engaging candor, eloquence, and wit, Paramahansa Yogananda tells the inspiring chronicle of his life: the experiences of his remarkable childhood, encounters with many saints and sages during his youthful search throughout India for an illumined teacher, ten years of training in the hermitage of a revered yoga master, and the thirty years that he lived and taught in America. Also recorded here are his meetings with Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Luther Burbank, the Catholic stigmatist Therese Neumann, and other celebrated spiritual personalities of East and West. The author clearly explains the subtle but definite laws behind both the ordinary events of everyday life and the extraordinary events commonly termed miracles. His absorbing life story becomes the background for a penetrating and unforgettable look at the ultimate mysteries of human existence.
A Fantastic Account of a Great Yogi For anyone interested in spirituality, this is a fantastic book. I admit I was slow to believe in much of what I read in this book, but over the next few years after its purchase, it wound up changing my life beyond measure. I own a great many books on religion and spirituality, but this one will always hold a special place in my heart and in my life. I highly recommend this book; and for the first and only time on Amazon, I would give this item more than 5 stars if I could. An inspirational classic! "The Book" for seekers of Self-Realization! I first read this book 40 years ago. It is still an inspirational classic today. I am re-reading it and other Yogananda books to promote my spiritual growth.Rare accounts of spiritual prodigies and their ecstasy-filled lives. These experiences are available to you too. If you are on a spiritual path and meditation is of interest to you, drop every other book on meditation and read this one. While there are many modern good writers about the topic of meditation, few offer glimpses into states of bliss that are attainable. Yogananda tells us that bliss is achievable by everybody through techniques of concentration. The subjects were rare accounts of Hindu saints met personally by Yogananda. His description of his spiritual journeys, those of his master, his master's master and other Hindu spiritual prodigies will make you see life in a completely different manner. Even though you may not have had these spiritual experiences, to have a thorough account of their lives, their teachings, and their ecstatic experiences, is profound and are rare accounts seldom heard of. There is wisdom in every page. West meets East. Happiness is an inside job; it cannot be found externally. Here is Yogananda's summary of the Bengali "Joy-Permeated Mother": "Casting aside every inferior attachment, Ananda Moyi Ma offers her sole allegiance to the Lord. Not by the hair-splitting distinctions of scholars but by the sure logic of faith, the child-like saint has solved the only problem in human life--establishment of unity with God". Never have my eyes feasted on such beautiful prose about difficult to understand, rare experiences. I feel forever changed by the experience of reading this book, and I consider myself well-read. This book has become my new bible and will guide me forward in life. When Steve Jobs died, he had one book on his ipad, and this was it. George Harrison says without this book he wouldn't want to live. Now I know why.
